You can be a freelance web designer with customers. It doesn’t matter how much training you have. You could have no formal training, but if people have asked you to make them a web site, and you have COMPLETED their site for them, that would make you a freelance web designer.

You would be a professional web designer if people PAID you for your work.

Can you get a company to hire you? I don’t know. I haven’t seen the quality of your work. You might be horrible, regardless of any training you have had. Assemble an online portfolio, print out the best, and start interviewing for jobs. You’ll find out in a few weeks if you can get a job or not.

Being a freelancer is not just about being a great designer. This is of course essential but you also need to be business minded, up to date with current trends and have something unique. Its a tough scene to get into but if you possess any of the above qualities GO FOR IT! I would research into pricing of websites as this is something that is a bit of a grey area. Don’t get ripped of but don’t charge too much. If you can get that balance right then you’re going to be very successful

no doubt about it. I know basic web design and have made some good extra money just making little web sites for people and their business.
    http://WWW.SAESA.org, http://WWW.Woodysfirewood.com, among others.
Your only limited by what you can do.

I have been a freelance web designer for 3-4 some odd years. It was all self taught. But a few things to know upfront is. Web Design, unless it’s large scale or high end, does not pay enough to be a full time job.

Second, unless you have some examples under your belt, you will usually not be taken seriously. To start, you need to design some sites for free, or very low priced, knowing they will be your proverbial resume sites.

Third, learn a CMS as early as possible, it is how 90% of all good sites are built. CMS Example being Joomla, WordPress and so on, I recommend Joomla. Nightmare to learn at first, but so easy to use afterward.

Also, never design a site that you would not use for yourself. Which is where a designers eye comes in handy. I can look at a site and tell you if I like it or not, and why I do or don’t, and what I could do to make it better. Deviantart is a treasure trove for Web 2.0 ideas for designs.

Lastly… Templates are the world and the moon… Taking a template and hacking it to bits till it looks how YOU want, yet in the end no where near how it originally looked is quite a good feeling. I often use a template for a Jump-Start. Something to get me pointed in the right direction.

Again. Joomla. Learn it, get good at it and the world is your oyster.
Good luck and have fun! If you don’t love web design, its not where one should be. Love your job! Be Passionate!

Yes. you can. What you will have to do to be more productive is to have a third party software design to assist you with your work. a good one I have used in the past id Artisteer ( google it and you will find it) download it, try it for free and you can do amazing work. I suggest that you use word press with it.
