Put your work in an online portfolio. I am sure there will be a CPU there. Web design is about more than good design. It is about user friendliness and functionality. If someone is going to hire you, they will want to use the web site, not see it.

Get some business cards printed for your name and online portfolio. And then if you want to bring something physical, print out screen shots and put them on nice paper and bind them together in a little booklet.

The people interviewing you probably don’t want to be forced to look at your work, so you are right that bringing along your laptop is a bad idea.

I don’t think carrying a formal portfolio with you is a good idea. It’s a bit pushy. I would hand them a few examples of your work on good quality paper (not photo paper, it’s too bulky). If they seem interested you can then offer to show them some other work.

What you do take depends largely on how well written your present work is. For instance, if you have coded directly in HTML, CSS and javascript then I would put examples of your work on a CD and hand it to them at the interview. Make sure that all your code validates and tell them that.

However, if you have used programs like FrontPage I would avoid letting them see your source code. Such programs create horrible code.

    Good luck.

when i hire a designer i want to see what they have done and i’d want to see their work on a screen. i’d cover my bases if i where you. i’d have it on a disc and post it on the web. i don’t think a laptop is a bad backup plan. i take mine to interviews just in case and twice its been great to have. shows you are really interested in showing what you have.

    Hi craigorio,

Very nice idea. If you have an online portfolio website that would look more professional while attending interviews.

Try to build a very beautiful and professional portfolio website and create your own yourname@yoursite.com mail ID. These things will boost your presence and become added advantage over other candidates who attend for the interview.

    All the best.
